Seconds Count in a Sudden Cardiac Arrest!

#RestartaHeartDay – 16th October 2019

In the event of a cardiac arrest, every minute that passes with no assistance from an electric shock decreases your chance of survival by 10%. Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is a sudden loss of blood flow resulting from the failure of the heart to effectively pump and is one of our nation’s biggest killer. Surviving one in New Zealand is estimated to be 10%, or 25% if there’s a bystander.

AEDs (Automatic External Defibrillator) are the devices used to deliver a shock to a victim suffering SCA. While the average ambulance response times in New Zealand are very good, they are not often fast enough to deliver a lifesaving shock. Creating faster & easier access of defibrillators in the community & workplaces throughout NZ is a key measure for increasing SCA survival rates.
